Lucas walked Trent as far as the agent’s car parked under the porte cochere. “Why would anyone so ill adapted for parenting adopt a child?”

Trent paused with one hand on the open door. “To cement a faltering marriage, to promote political ambition, to gain status in the family or community. And those are the least harmful ones. At least it doesn’t seem the Stemples had any of the truly dark reasons. Their abuse doesn’t appear to have been physical.”

“Right. They just took a little girl who’d been loved and treasured, who had gone through only God knows what kind of trauma, and proceeded to convince her she was worthless.”

“We might want to try hypnosis again. Depending on what you learn from Meg’s tapes,” Trent said.

“You know I’ll turn any pertinent information over to you immediately. The rest will be up to Meg.”

Lucas didn’t like the knowing look in his friend’s eyes as he absorbed that quick response. Or the half smile that lingered. “It’s like that, is it?” Trent asked.

He elected not to answer that question. “You might like to know that Paul Slater, Carlton’s P.I., hasn’t been able to find anything on the alleged niece who was reported by the Stemples to have been Meg’s birth mother—or have they given up on that story by now? He did learn that the office of the attorney who handled the adoption mysteriously burned shortly before the attorney caught a plane to Brazil only one step ahead of the tax boys.”

“It’s driving you crazy, isn’t it?” Trent asked. “Having to rely on Paul Slater and me for information you want to be out there gathering?”

“I’m needed here.”

“Yes. But what about what you need? The Bureau would take you in a minute, Lucas. You know that. You wouldn’t have to go back into covert work.”

“My friend.” Lucas clapped his hand on Trent’s shoulder and pushed down, urging him into the car. “Please stop trying to fix my life. I know what I need to do, and I know what I want to do.”

“But are you doing it?”

“Go,” Lucas said, smiling but feeling little humor. “Solve this case. Make your career and take the glory. Believe me, I don’t want either one.”
